Elephant Vs Chilli
Indian farmers have started to combat the "elephant menace" with chilli, in a bid to deter the animals from eating crops and damaging farmland. About 400 Indians are killed each year by elephants, so the government is encouraging farmers to plant chilli plants on elephant routes.
India's 21,000 wild elephants often clash with the country's 1.2 billion inhabitants and 1 millon hectares of farmland are damaged. The elephants frequently die in makeshift traps set by villagers or when hit by trains.
The use of chilli - often used in tear-gas in India - mixed with dung and made into fences has been tested successfully in Namibia.
